Supplemental Learning Requirement for Opening Doors and Smart Start

The 5-hour supplemental learning requirement for Opening Doors (GUID 506/511) and Smart Start (GUID 592) can be satisfied by completing Directed Learning Activities and workshops. Tutoring on assigned papers does not count towards supplemental learning.  Writing activities that satisfy the 5-hour supplemental learning requirement may be completed at the Rancho Campus Writing Center, The Chino Reading & Writing Center, or the Fontana Success Center; however, you should check in advance for offering availabilty.  For Chino and Fontana hours click here

All Writing Center activities require setting an appointment.

Directed Learning Activities

One way to satisfy the 5-hour supplemental learning requirement for Opening Doors and Smart Start is to complete Directed Learning Activities.  These activities consist of an independent portion that takes approximately 30-45 minutes to finish and a follow-up session with a tutor that lasts approximately 15-30 minutes depending on the activity.  The independent portion of a Directed Learning Activity can be done in the Writing Center without an appointment.  However, an appointment must be set for the follow-up session with the tutor.

Click here for Directed Learning Activity descriptions.

Workshops

Another way to satisfy the 5-hour supplemental learning requirement for Opening Doors and Smart Start is to attend a Writing Center workshop.  Workshops are 50- to 60-minute small group sessions that are taught by faculty tutors and cover a range of topics from prewriting activities to research papers.  For a complete list of Writing Center workshops visit the Writing Center page on the Chaffey College website.  Workshops are limited to 10 participants and tend to fill up quickly.  You can set an appointment for a workshop up to 6 business days in advance.

When attending a workshop at the Rancho Campus Writing Center, plan on arriving 10 minutes before the workshop begins. If you arrive late, you may lose your reserved spot to a student on the waitlist.
