Who are Writing Center consultants?

All writing consultants are friendly and professional faculty instructional specialists, graduate students, and peers trained to work with students who are at different class levels, from different disciplines, and in various stages in their writing development.

 

Consultants enjoy writing, reading, helping others, learning new ideas, and working with a diverse college community.

 

A consultant might help a student practice academic behavior by asking questions, reviewing assignment directions, generating ideas, developing editing techniques, and discussing revision choices.  Writing consultants will help students to develop composing, editing, and proofreading skills.  The Writing Center’s philosophy is, “Yes, we can help you with that.”

 

All of our non-certificated writing consultants are required to participate in an ongoing training program certified by the College Reading and Learning Association.

 

 

How do I become a Writing Center consultant?

You may apply to become a Writing Center consultant as an Apprentice 2, Apprentice 4, or faculty instructional specialist.  Apprentice 2's do not possess a bachelor's degree.  They provide individual tutoring and basic computer and online instructional support for faculty, staff, and students.  Apprentice 4's possess a bachelor's degree.  They provide mentoring and individual, small group, and online tutoring. 

 

Apprentice applicants must also meet the following requirements:

• An “A” in the subject-matter to be tutored (Exceptions can be made at the Instructional Specialists’ discretion.)
• A recommendation stating the applicant’s qualifications
• An interview with the Instructional Specialist
• A bachelor’s degree (Apprentice 4 only) and transcripts

Faculty instructional specialists must meet minimum requirements for instructors at a California community college.  They provide mentoring and individual, small group, and online tutoring, and they facilitate Writing Center workshops.
