Reference Books

To find a general overview of a subject, librarians recommend the following reference books.  Reference books are consulted for their factual or background information on a topic and are not meant to be read from beginning to end.  They are used in the library only and are not checked out.  You can photocopy relevant pages.  Reference books are located in front of the Reference Desk.

Encyclopedia of Children and Chiildhood in History and Society  R 301.431 E56

Books in the general collection

To find books to check out of the library:

Click on Catalog on the Chaffey College Library home page. 

Enter your search term.  For example,

All Headings        child care centers

You can also combine two terms.

For example,

All Headings        brain

AND

All Headings        learning

Books with a Call Number are located in the library.

If you cannot find a book on your topic, ask the librarian at the Reference Desk.

 

Electronic Books

Electronic books, EBooks - NetLibrary,read page by page on your computer screen, are accessed by following directions for Electronic Databases below.

To access EBooks from off campus, you must first create an account at the library.  Ask a librarian for further instructions.

 

Electronic Databases

  1. Click on AGent on the Chaffey College Library home page.
  2. Log in
  3. Click on Databases A – Z
  4. Click on the database of your choice

The following databases are helpful:

Academic Search Premier ( academic  journals and popular publications )

 

Gale Virtual Reference Library ( encyclopedias and other reference books )

Consult this database for a general foundation on your topic.  It provides chapters from specialized encyclopedias providing the history and/or significance of the topic.

The library has other databases specializing in specific subjects.  Consult a librarian.
