CareersReference BooksTo choose a career for your research paper, and to get career overviews, librarians recommend the following reference books. Reference books are consulted for their factual or background information on a topic and are not meant to be read from beginning to end. They are used in the library only and are not checked out. You can photocopy relevant pages. Reference books are located in front of the Reference desk. Note some books below are also on the internet. Occupational Outlook Handbook R 371.47 U58 This book gives you practical information about each occupation such as nature of the work, training and education needed, earnings, job prospects and working conditions. This book is also on the internet. Similar information may be found in: Career Information Center R 371.42 C27 and Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance R 371.42 E56 See also: O*NET Dictionary of Occupational Titles R 371.42 011 This book provides comprehensive information on key characteristics of workers and occupations. It is also on the internet.

Databases for specialized subjects such as CINAHL PLUS for nursing. Be sure to check “full-text.” Each database handles somewhat differently so be prepared to try different search terms.
