Electronic reference resources

The following electronic reference books are accessible via our eBooks-NetLibrary database. To get to eBooks-NetLibrary, log in to AGent, the Chaffey databases portal and click on the Books link. Ebooks-NetLibrary is the second link in this section. Search the follwoing resources by to title for access:

  • The Hutchison Dictionary of Symbols in Art-Contains alphabetized entries and descriptions of various biblical, mythical, and other major symbols in art. 
  • Historical Dictionary of Renaissance Art-Contains hundreds of entries on significant Renaissance artists, architects, royal figures, and commoners.  There are also entries on major themes, techniques, and technical terms in addition to an extensive bibliography.
  • Encyclopedia of American Folk Art-Over six hundred diverse, topical entries containing information drawn from three centuries of American folk creativity in the visual arts.

 

The library has multi-volume sets of art encyclopedias.  They are used in the library only.  You can photocopy relevant pages. Reference books are located in front of the Reference desk.

Electronic Books

Electronic books, EBooks – NetLibrary,read page by page on your computer screen, are accessed by following directions for Electronic Databases below. 

To access EBooks from off campus, you must first create an account at the library.  Ask a librarian for further instructions.

 

To find articles in art journals consult the library’s electronic databases.

ARTstor ( images )

A digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities and social sciences.

 

Expanded Academic ASAP ( academic journals and magazines )

Check “to documents with full text”

Use “Subdivisions” link to organize sources into categories

 

Academic Search Premier ( academic journals and popular publications )

Check “full text” and “scholarly ( peer-reviewed ) journals”

 

JSTOR ( academic journals including older, historical issues )

Click “Advanced Search”

Where you see “Limit to type” click “article”

If you want to limit your search to art journals, scroll down and check “Art & Art History”

 

Project Muse ( academic journals specializing in the humanities and social sciences )

Click “Advanced Articles Search”

Where you see “Type of Content” check “Articles Only ( No Reviews )”

If you want to limit your search to art journals, scroll to “By Discipline” and select “Art and Architecture”

 

The library also has art journals in print including Artforum and Artnews.
