III. Selecting Your First Semester Courses

A. Important Considerations for Planning Your First Term

Planning Perspective: Time=Units At Chaffey College all college courses are completed in one semester. Before you decide on how many courses to take, you need to know something about “semester units.” College courses differ in the amount of time and work they require. They are measured in terms of units.

The Unit: A Working Definition The number of course units is generally the number of lecture hours per week a class meets. For example, a one-unit lecture class meets one hour per week; and a three-unit lecture class meets three hours per week.

For each unit you take,
expect at least two hours of outside homework per week. You must, therefore, manage your class and study time most carefully – keeping in mind your employment and other personal responsibilities.
Note: Classes that have labs will meet more hours per week but will have less homework.

How Many Units to Take The College strongly recommends that students who work part-time or engage in extracurricular activities (social and/or athletic) follow these proportions in distributing their hourly time per week:

Semester Units Expected Time
Minimum Homework
Recommended Maximum Time Work/Other Activities
12-18
10-12
3-9
24-36 hrs/wk
20-24 hrs/wk
6-18 hrs/wk
20-15 hrs/wk
30-20 hrs/wk
40-30 hrs/wk
