When deciding on what courses to take, always consider the fact that some of the courses you may be taking seem to be a review of coursework previously completed in high school. For some, this may be frustrating. Remember, recency and frequency of using these English and mathematical skills are key factors in being able to perform well on the assessment tests. Students who have graduated from high school within the last 6 months may not have been actively employing high-level reading, writing, and algebra skills. College courses require you to function in these areas immediately at a college level. For most students, review is helpful in getting “back on track”, so to speak. That is, bringing critical math and English skills to a level where you can participate in your subjects actively and with confidence. If you take exception to the results and want to know how to use your background education from high school to advance to a higher level course, go to the Counseling Office and visit with a counselor on a walk in basis. Bring your test results with you to discuss with the counselor. Some students, however, do attempt to advance to higher-level courses without regard for their placement. Undoubtedly, they do so at their own risk. The lack of preparedness for a course is the responsibility of the student. Instructors will teach a course at its appropriate level. Some instructors choose to insure that all students are appropriately prepared for their courses and will poll students at the beginning of a class to determine if they have met the necessary prerequisites. Other instructors request that students bring their assessment results to show their placement into the desired course. Most instructors, however, leave the responsibility of preparation to the student, expecting that they are knowledgeable about the appropriate prerequisites and placements and have selected accordingly. Your placements have taken into consideration responses to questions you were asked when you first began your testing. If you remember, questions were asked about the amount of time that has lapsed since you were last enrolled in classes, grades earned in English and math courses, and the number of years of English and math completed in high school. These responses were used in the calculation of your placement scores in determining your placement in English and math courses. If you have met the prerequisites by courses completed in high school or at another college, bring a copy of your transcripts to the Counseling Office and request either a Prerequisite/Corequisite Validation or Challenge Form prior to registering for the desired course. You can also print these forms online. For the Prerequisite/Corequisite Validation please click here. For the Prerequisite/Corequisite Challenge Form please click here. It is highly recommended that you speak with a counselor to make sure that you are completing the correct form and that you have all documentation attached or on file with the college.
